How to address the demands for Halal Gelatin in Malaysian Pharmaceutical Industry?
The global gelatin market has
been flourishing in the whole world for last few decades. The inclusion of
gelatin in many items has increased the value of it and many industrialists are
now planning to establish a manufacturing unit of gelatin. Gelatin is being
used in numerous industries with an estimated budget of $2.7 billion in 2015 which
is increasing on a yearly basis. The increase in this production is due to the
fact that the requirement of gelatin in the pharmaceutical industry has been
increased and reached at $1.3 billion and the experts have the opinion that the
ratio will go up in the coming years.
The estimations are brighter and
faster than the targets achieved in 2015. It is expected that the market of
gelatin will be $3.2 billion in 2020. This research has been conducted by Grand
View Research. These results have been developed at the rate of 3.8 percent
increased which is actually calculated with the help of cumulative annual
growth rate. When we talk about the pharmaceutical industry, it is one of the
largest industries where gelatin is used and experts think that its share is in
between 21% to 26% in the recent years.
The major issue which is directly
related to gelatin is that the normal gelatin is forbidden in Islam, which is
the second biggest religion in the world. Islam does not allow those items in
which non-halal ingredients are added. When we go some years back, we will get
to know that there will be no awareness about gelatin in the Muslim countries
but, now halal gelatin is used in Malaysia, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and many other countries where
people are well informed and educated.
Due to this specific concern of
the Muslims, the pharmaceutical companies are now transferring their weight
towards halal gelatin. According to the research, around 45% of gelatin is
obtained from porcine which is actually pork-based. The remaining gelatin is
being taken from fish, cows and vegetables, but now the trends are now saying
that halal gelatin will get acceptance from the whole world.
The pharmaceutical companies of
Muslim countries like Iran, Turkey, Germany, Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia demand halal gelatin from
international producers and due to this particular reason, the companies are
now focusing more on halal sources of gelatin. The Malaysian pharmaceutical
market is one of the most advanced industries in the Muslim countries where all
types of medicines are being prepared and provided in different regions of the
Muslim world.
As the demand of halal gelatin is increasing in Malaysia,
the local investors are now taking interest in producing this gelatin. The
companies are now establishing the halal gelatin industry to fulfill the demand
of food and pharmaceutical industry as the awareness has also been increased in
the Malaysian society.
As a whole, Malaysian Muslims are leaving normal
gelatin and moving towards halal. Recently, people left sweets, desserts and
ice cream produced with the help of normal gelatin and now they are anxious
about medicines as well. The time is near when Muslims will use only halal
gelatin and international manufacturers and food and medicine suppliers will
also have to think to keep their Muslim consumers with them.
